[EDIT: I'm not really that mad at Linux in general, just... disappointed, especially in Ubuntu.]
Kiss my ass Linux, I’m better off with an ACTUAL Unix system. After the almost 2 weeks of torturing myself with repeated attempts of different methods of trying to install Ubuntu, I’ve finally had enough of this bullshit.
First off, I admit I'm a complete noob with both Linux and Unix. my basic Idea was too use it as save boat should Windows give up, file recovery, and as working environment for learning to program. I’ve bought a book about Linux, been trying Ubuntu in VirtualBox, compiled some programs with gcc (simple ones, I'm a noob in that as well), and genuinely enjoyed it.
First attempt was fairly OK: The idea was to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive that can be switched off so all I had to do is turn it on and reboot and boom Ubuntu. Didn’t work, Ubuntu never booted automatically. There was also this problem with a warning that Windows was not properly shut down and there have been changes made to the system, but I think that was just a mistake on my part by not pressing ctrl-alt-del before Windows could properly boot. Should’ve let it that way.
Next, I tried a different external hard disk. Maybe it’s unrealistic but since the hard disk is 4 tb, and using 4 tb was a waste, I thought I’d use 1 tb for Linux, and the rest as external hard drive. So I used 1 tb for Linux (split into 3 partitions), setup gave me a critical error, that it wasn’t able to install grub2. Don’t know what went wrong, maybe either “/” or “/swap” partition was too small. Then tried to use only one partition (/), it worked well once, but that was an exposed hard drive with SATA adapter I got from an external hard drive with a busted USB port, and I feared it wouldn’t last long if I let it lying outside. I don’t think “naked” hard disks are a good idea, unless you use them in emergency. Anyway, that didn’t work either. I tried several times, but to no avail.
Now, I know I’ve probably made mistakes, or that those problems could’ve been fixed easily, but that’s not what pissed me off. What really pissed me off is: I used a standard installation to use the entire disk (on the external hard drive), and then I suddenly couldn’t boot anything at all anymore. grub corrupted my Windows MBR and there was a “No such device error”. It took me the entire afternoon to fix this problem. After I’ve calmed down, I’ve thought, since grub has always been the problem, “Hey, maybe this DVD is too old! Maybe I should get the newest version!”. So I decided to give it one last shot, and I downloaded Ubuntu 17.04. I burned a CD, installation gave me an error that it was corrupt. I burned the ISO on the naked hard drive and ran the installation again, The same thing happened again, even though it said the installation was successful. Y’Know if you use a fucking automatic installation you’d expect it to boot, and not give you more problems than you’d had before. I downloaded a Linux Mint ISO, but right now I’m way too tired. I’m back to square one, basically, and wasted 2 weeks for nothing. For what? A distro that is supposedly so easy to install and use? Fuck you.
I’ve tried Solaris 11 before that whole ordeal too, and enjoyed it even more than Linux, but I thought I’d learn to use Linux first and then move to Unix, Hell, I’ve actually thought of installing both. But in the end I decided to use OpenIndiana, because I’m not a company, and I’d be dependent on Oracle for updates and programs. So far I’m really enjoying it. The only negative things are that it does not seem to have any Office programs (installing LibreOffice doesn’t work, for some reason, although it is available in the repositories), and support is scarce. And tutorials are rather messy. But I'm willing to take that, since it's not like I don't have any experience.
It's like back when I had Ubuntu on that hard disk (the one you could turn off), but I’m willing to take that second to press ctrl-alt-del.
So to close this post, I’d like to say: Fuck you Linux, but especially: Fuck you, Ubuntu. You already made me quit before I could even use you.
